What Pet Insurance Policies Do Tesco Offer?
Tesco has four types of insurance policy on offer, and in this section, we will take a quick look at each of them and the basic things that they cover.
First, you have the standard insurance. This will cover most of the basics and is designed for peace of mind at an affordable price. Here’s what you can expect from this coverage:
- Cover of up to £3,000 for vet fees for each eligible illness or accident for up to 12 months from the first date of treatment.
- Lost pet cover. Up to £1,000 to advertise for your pet (including up to £200 which can be used as a reward).
- Includes cover for treatment by a referral vet.
- Protection for puppies and kittens that are at least 8 weeks old, with no maximum age limit for vet fees.
- 24-hour access to vetfone, a UK helpline if your pet becomes unwell or you need advice on any pet related questions or concerns.

Next, you have the accident and injury cover. This is the cheapest option, but it will not cover as much as standard insurance. Here is what you can expect:
- Vet fees limit of up to £3,000.
- Insurance for puppies and kittens that are at least 8 weeks old, with no maximum age limit.
- Includes cover for treatment by a referral vet.
- 24-hour access to vetfone, a UK helpline if your pet becomes unwell or you need advice on any pet related questions or concerns.

Extra cover is next up from standard, and it is a little pricier, but offers a lot more.
This is a good choice if you want more bang for your buck. Here’s what you can expect:
- Vet fees for each eligible illness or injury of up to £4,000 or £7,500, until your vet fee limit, is reached.
- Lost pet cover. Up to £1,000 to advertise for your pet (including up to £200 which can be used as a reward).
- Includes cover for treatment by a referral vet.
- Extensive range of features and benefits, including the choice of fixed excess.
- Protection for puppies and kittens that are at least 8 weeks old, with no maximum age limit for vet fees.
- 24-hour access to vetfone, a UK helpline if your pet becomes unwell or you need advice on any pet related questions or concerns.
Finally, you have the premiere cover. This tends to be the biggest and most extensive cover you will find from Tesco, so it is definitely one worth looking through and considering. Here is what you can expect from premium coverage:
- Total vet fees limit of £7,500 or £10,000 per year, reinstated annually if policy renewed.
- Lost pet cover. Up to £1,000 to advertise for your pet (including up to £200 which can be used as a reward).
- Includes cover for treatment by a referral vet.
- Dental fees for illness and accidents are covered in your annual vet fees, when your pet has had an annual check-up and any recommended treatments carried out.
- Protection for puppies and kittens that are at least 8 weeks old, with no maximum age limit for vet fees.
- 24-hour access to vetfone, a UK helpline if your pet becomes unwell or you need advice on any pet related questions or concerns.

What is the Cost of Tesco Pet Insurance?
The cost of pet insurance definitely varies depending on a number of things. The breed, age, and sex of a dog can all contribute towards the total cost of your insurance each month, as well as any health conditions.
To make things easier, we have selected insurance for a neutered male Labrador that is three years old and lives in Basingstoke. Here is what we got:
1. Accident and Injury: £4.45 per month (up to £3,000 of cover).
2. Standard: £16.98 (up to £3,000 covering new and existing illness).
3. Extra: £21 (up to £7,500 of cover).
4. Premiere: £33.30 (up to £10,000 of cover).
Here are some of the factors that can contribute to the cost of insurance for your pet, as it is important to remember that this is just a rough guide:
- Age
- Breed
- Sex
- Any existing illnesses , dental or medical
- Whether or not they have been neutered/spayed
- The postcode of the owner

Making a Claim on Tesco Pet Insurance
There are three key steps to making a claim on your Tesco pet insurance. They are quite simple, but very important, so make sure you take the time to remember what they are.
The first thing you need to do is make sure that the vet that sees your dog is in the Tesco vet referral network.
This is something we will look at a little more in the next section, and it is the most important thing to check before you take your pet to the vet. If they are not in the network, you will not be able to make a claim.
Next, you need to go to the Tesco website and download the claim form that is provided for you there. Print it out, and take the time to fill it in.
Alternatively, you can fill it out on your computer. This part does not take long, but make sure all of the information is accurate.
The final step is returning your completed claim form to return it to Tesco. You can do this via email or post. The details of each method are listed on their website for you to find easily. Email is usually the fastest way to go if you are looking for a quick claim.

What is the RSA Vet Referral Network?
The RSA is an underwriter for a number of pet insurance companies, including Tesco.
By creating a network of vets, it aims to provide a fast and affordable service as well as lower the cost of pet insurance as a whole.
It means that the RSA can ensure that vets provide excellent quality care for animals, as well as increase the available treatments, all while encouraging them to send the bill directly to the RSA when the treatment is over instead of the customers.
The network is one that is used for non-emergency claims only, which make up a relatively small percentage of the claims that the RSA deals with as a whole.
It does tend to be cheaper than an insurance company that does not use a network, but you also have to be careful that you choose and use an RSA vet.
If you have a non-emergency visit with the vet that is not in the network, customers will have to pay an excess of £200. This has proved controversial, and some insurance companies that use RSA vets have declared that they will not allow customers to pay the charge.
However, it is very easy to see if your policy means you would be charged by checking the terms and conditions. You can also call your vet before the visit to check that they are in the RSA network.

Tesco Pet Insurance Discount Codes
There are no discount codes for Tesco pet insurance at the moment, but there are general discounts available.
The first of these is the 10% multi-pet discount – something you will find with many insurers. This makes it cheaper for all of your pets to be insured with the same company.
You also have a 15% discount for new customers. This is an online discount that is automatically applied to your quote, and it will last for the first year that you are insured with them.
It does not cover the very basic accident and injury insurance, but standard, extra, and premiere are all included in the offer.
If you find yourself in search of promotional codes, it is best to keep searching for them on a regular basis. There is an area for you to enter them, but we could not find any that worked when this article was written.
Tesco Pet Insurance Clubcard Points
If you have a Clubcard, then you can receive an additional discount. It is not clear how much is offered unless you enter your Clubcard details on their website, but any discount is a good one.
The Clubcard discount is guaranteed by Tesco, so out of all the discounts, it is one that you are sure to receive every time.
