What Policies Do PetPlan Offer for Dogs?

PetPlan offers three types of insurance, one of which is sure to suit you and your dog. In this section, we take a further look at each of these policies and some of the key things they cover.

First, you have the essential cover. This only lasts 12 months and has to be renewed by you at the end of the period. It is the cheapest option, but not always the best. Here is what it covers:

  • Up to £3,000 in vet bills per condition for 12 months, after which coverage ends.
  • Complementary veterinary treatment of £500 per condition for 12 months.
  • Third party liability of £1 million per incident.
  • Boarding fees of up to £1,000 if you are hospitalised.
  • Pet loss of up to £1,000, as well as an additional £1,000 for advertising and reward money.
  • Holiday cancellation of up to £1,000 if your pet becomes ill and you need to cancel.
  • Pet bereavement helpline.

Next, there is the classic cover. This is a lifetime plan, which means it will cover illnesses over the course of your dog’s life. This is the most popular option, and here is what you can expect it to cover:

  • Up to £7,000 per year for vet bills.
  • Complementary veterinary treatment of £1,000 per year.
  • Third party liability of £2 million per incident.

  • Pet loss of up to £1,500, as well as an additional £1,500 for advertising and reward money.
  • Holiday cancellation of up to £1,500 if your pet becomes ill and you need to cancel.
  • Pet bereavement helpline.

Finally, you have the ultimate cover. This is the most extensive cover offered, and it is excellent if you want full coverage for every possibility. A pricier step, but often worth the cost, here is some of what it covers:

  • Up to £12,000 in vet bills.
  • Complementary veterinary treatment of £2,000 per year.
  • Third party liability of £3 million per incident.
  • Up to £2,000 if your pet dies from an illness.

What is the Cost of PetPlan Insurance for Dogs?

Before you look at the cost of pet insurance from PetPlan, or any other company, there are a few things that will affect the amount you will be quoted for pet insurance.

As a result, it is important to remember that the costs listed here are a rough guide. Here are some of the factors that could affect the quote you receive:

  • Age
  • Breed
  • Sex
  • Any existing illnesses
  • Whether or not they have been neutered/spayed
  • The postcode of the owner

We got a quote from PetPlan to give you an idea of the cost of insurance from them. To make things easier, we have selected insurance for a neutered male Labrador that is three years old and lives in Basingstoke. Here is what we got:

  • Essential: £23.35 per month (up to £3,000 of cover for 12 months).
  • Classic: £42.01 (up to £4,000) or £47.71 (up to £7,000).
  • Ultimate: £64.70 (up to £12,000 of cover).

Making a Claim on PetPlan Insurance

If you want to make a claim through PetPlan, the process is actually incredibly easy – especially as so many vets use or endorse it as an insurance company.

There are only a couple of steps you need to take in order to make your claim.

First, you need to print off or request a claim form. Either method works, although printing it from them directly tends to be the faster route.

You can also call them via their customer support number if you have trouble finding it or need help filling it out.

Once you have filled out the claim form, you can send it back to PetPlan who will begin processing it for approval. They will then let you know if your claim is successful.

Alternatively, many vets will allow you to bring the form to them, and they will process it for you, so you only have to pay the excess and can have a much faster claims process.

PetPlan Insurance Discount Codes

There are no discount codes for PetPlan online, and they do not usually have promotional codes for their insurance. However, there are a few discounts available that may appeal to you.

They have 10% off when you get your quote and accept it online. This will come up automatically when you look for a quote and are given your prices. This can be quite a helpful saving, and it is something that several pet insurance providers offer.

Additionally, they have a multi-pet discount where you will get an extra 10% off for each extra pet that you add onto your insurance policy.

Another offer that a good number of insurance companies provide, it really helps bring the costs down if you are an animal lover.

PetPlan also has a great offer where they offer four weeks of free insurance. This usually comes as a result of one of several situations:

  • A new puppy from a breeder
  • A new puppy that has been registered with a vet (you can get 8 weeks combining this and the one above)
  • A dog that has been rescued from Battersea and some other rescues

Free insurance for a month can take a little of the weight that comes with getting a new pet off, and it also means that you have a month (or two) to sort everything out. It’s a great offer that is rarely given by anyone else.

Customer Reviews

Generally speaking, PetPlan has fantastic ratings from customers, with very few review sites taking a vastly negative stance. Here are some of the figures so that you can have a look for yourself.

  • Feefo has rated Tesco pet insurance at 4.45/5 with nearly 6,000 customer reviews.
  • Pet Insurance Review has rated it at 2.5/5 with over 30 customer reviews.
  • Review Centre has rated it at 4.4/5 with nearly 3,000 customer reviews.
