What Does John Lewis Dog Insurance Cover?
Finding the correct coverage for your dog is one of the most important aspects of choosing dog insurance. Thankfully, John Lewis offers three tiers of coverage that you can choose from, allowing you to find a plan that will work for you and your furry friend.
These tiers are separated into Essential, Plus, and Premier, each representing different coverage options and prices. All three options cover a wide range of situations from vet fees all the way to helping you if your pet is lost or stolen.
The thing that really matters is how much coverage you get with your chosen tier. The Essential insurance is the cheapest but also covers the smallest amount of vet fees out of the three.
Premier insurance is the most expensive but also offers a much higher amount of vet fee coverage while the Plus insurance sits comfortably in the middle. It’s all about a combination of what you need and what you can afford.

How Much Does John Lewis Dog Insurance Cost?
The price you pay to insure your dog will depend on several factors, these include;
- Breed of dog
- Age of dog
- Any previous conditions
- Where you live
For this quote, we based it on a 3-year-old cross-bread Labrador retriever living in Reading with no previous conditions –
This quote is based on an excess of £100, but this can be adjusted from as little as £60, up to £500.
Essential | Plus | Premier | |
Cover price | £20.32 a month (0% APR) | £30.39 a month (0% APR) | £36.92 a month (0% APR) |

How Does Changing The Policy Excess Effect the Price?
As you can see below, by increasing or decreasing the excess it will impact the price a fair bit. In short, by reducing the excess from £100 to £60 you will be increasing the premium around 15%, and at the top end by increasing your premium to a whopping £500 you can reduce your monthly payment over 30%, though we highly recommend you do not choose the latter.

How Industry Experts Rate John Lewis Dog Insurance?
Having insight from industry experts can be a great guide when choosing dog insurance. It gives us a good idea of how reliable they are going to be as an insurance provider. The good news is that John Lewis has a 5-star Defaqto rating, offering a little peace of mind knowing that they meet industry standards.
The Which? rating is a little more complex and varies according to the insurance tier in question, showing what the reviewer thought of what each tier has to offer. The Essential coverage has the lowest rating at a less than average 48%. On the other hand, the Premier option has been given a good rating of 76% with the Plus coverage sitting comfortably in the middle of the two.
How do Customers Rate John Lewis Dog Insurance?
Thanks to our unique customer review rating, we have been able to gather customer reviews from across the web and score them based on good or excellent feedback that has been left. We then present it as a percentage, and John Lewis Pet Insurance has scored a reasonable 76% as a result.
We were able to find 72 user reviews that were specific to pet insurance plans from John Lewis on Trustpilot – the leading review platform in the UK. The average rating was not impressive at 2.44/5, but it is worth mentioning that most people who go to review platforms do so after they have had trouble with a company as opposed to wanting to praise good service.
Making a Claim on John Lewis Pet Insurance
The John Lewis website explains their claims process in three simple steps. It is not the fastest system, but it is an efficient one. Here are the three steps you need to follow to make a claim on John Lewis insurance.
- Call John Lewis up on the provided telephone number and talk through your claim with them. They will take your details and make a note of what you are looking to claim. Alternatively, you can download a form from their website. If you choose the latter option, skip the second step.
- In this step, the claims handler will go through everything with you, including the amount of excess to be paid and help you to start the claims process. They will ask for details of your vet, the condition that your dog is suffering from, and other relevant information.
- The final step is that the claims handler will send you a form to fill out. Alternatively, you may have already done this and completed it.
Once this is done, you can return the completed form, and the claim will be assessed. Once approved it can either be paid directly to you, or to your vet if you have a prior agreement. John Lewis claims they settle 93% of all pet insurance claims within just 5 days which is impressive.

John Lewis Pet Insurance Discount Codes
John Lewis does have a section for promotional codes when you go to get your insurance quote. However, we could not find any online at the moment, so it is worth keeping an eye out and perhaps signing up to their newsletter for the latest discounts and special offers.
Voucher code sites that we checked ( and we checked a lot) do not have any discounts that are valid.
If you have multiple pets in your household, John Lewis offers a 5% multi-pet discount. You can register up to three at one time online, and if you have more, you can call them up to have them all registered. While the multi-pet discount isn’t as large as other companies(ManyPets offer 15%) it is still quite a good deal(Animal friends offers no discounts)
When you get your quote and buy your insurance online, you can receive between 10% and 20% off your quote, though this is not a regular offering.
This amount can vary depending on the offer that is present at the time. Our research shows that it can vary between the two percentages, so it might be worth waiting for the larger offer to become live again.
While this is not a discount code as such, if you create the quote and take out a John Lewis Pet Insurance policy through Compare the Market you can get 2 for 1 cinema tickets, 50% off pizza deliveries, 25% off at Cafe-Nero as well as a host of other great deals.
