Dog Insurance News About Obese Dogs

Sainsbury's dog insurance has warned dog owners over giving their four-legged friend too many tasty treats.

In new research, the dog insurer has estimated that 34 per cent of the UK's combined cat and dog population are suffering from obesity.

Dog owners spend an average of £209 a year on feeding their pet, which is the equivalent of 550 tins of dog food!

"Many pet owners may like to treat their animals with food and snacks intended for human consumption, but they must be aware of the detrimental effect this can have on their pet's health," warned Claire Moyles, manager of Sainsbury's Pet Insurance.

She added that owners should choose foods from nutritionally-balanced and low-calorie ranges.

Earlier this month, Rebecca Ralph of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA Dog Insurance) urged people to take out dog insurance to avoid being stung with high veterinary bills.

People need to get out of the idea that 'treating' your dog at the table is a good thing, owners seem to forget that dogs are smaller than humans and that a just a sausage can significantly increase a dog's calorie intake, and just as in humans, this needs to carefully monitored to avoid heart problems and general ill health.

All of the best dog foods provide a balanced diet to keep your dog health and living a happier, longer life.

If you just remember that, just as with humans, there are no get-fit-quick schemes with diets, and it takes a exercise and a healthy diet to keep your dog in shape, and cut out the snacks, then your dog will live longer and happier, and also you're vet bill will be lower.
