It's Not Always Fun Being Home Alone
The party may have started for millions of teenagers when their parents have left the building, but their furry friends may not have as much fun if they are left ‘home alone’. The Daily Express recently reported that one in four dogs are left at home every day; that’s around 2.6 million animals locked up during busy working hours.
Leaving dogs home alone can easily lead to boredom and isolation, and have implications on their health. Although the garden can be a treasure trove for nosey dogs, half the dog owners surveyed, said this became a substitute for regular walks.
Although research did reveal dog owners leaving meals for their dogs, and letting them wander around freely in the home, these things are not always plus points. Dog need a regular feeding routine, and can easily cause damage in the home, if left bored and unmonitored. There’s always the chance that you could come home to a dog that’s been sick, pooped in the wrong place, or has left a path of destruction because it has been left along too long.
Sadly , however much these dog owners love their canine companions, 72 per cent of the 2,000 people surveyed, felt guilt at leaving their pets at home, while 13 per cent said buying a dog was a mistake, given the time needed to look after it.
Gocompare.com, the provider who carried out the poll, warned anyone thinking of getting a dog, of the care and attention it needs. Fresh air, exercise, and attention, all make for a happy, healthy dog, and maybe less trips to the vet as well. The moral of this story is, it’s just no fun for dogs to be home alone.
DogOwner.co.uk Says: It's easy to forget about your dog when busy lives take over, but it's important to give your dog the attention they deserve. If possible, make arrangements for a neighbour to let your dog out to stretch their legs in a yard or garden - or better still, come home on your lunch break (if working) and get out for as long as possible. It will not only do your dog good - but it will help de-stress you!
It might be a rush, but getting away from the office/email/phone/nagging boss and getting 15mins of walk time will have you back feeling good, and pooch ready for an afternoon snooze! If all else fails, find a local dog walker to get your dog out during the day.
