Dog Insurance Claims Rise During Summer

23rd May 2007

Consumers are more likely to make dog insurance claims as summer approaches, it has been claimed.

According to Tesco Dog Insurance, the warm months will see more Britons take their animals outside which could leave pets at risk of sunburn, bites or getting items stuck in their throats.

Spokesperson Monica McCormack pointed out there was a six per cent rise in dog insurance claims between May and June last year which "could have been a result of the hot weather starting earlier".

She said: "We really see an instance of higher claims when the sunny weather comes in and people are outside more with their dogs."

Ms. McCormack added that there also tends to be a rising amount of road traffic accidents involving pets over the summer.

DogOwner Says:

Sunburn - Well, we have never heard of any pet having sunburn before, it could just be a case of not knowing about it. A quick Google search reveals that dogs can unfortunately get sun burnt on their ears, noses and their bellies (woah - that must be one lazy mutt to lie down long enough to get sun burnt on their belly!).

So remember folks, make sure that your pooch is well looked after during those sunny days - this web site details some tips for sunburn protection / prevention.

Bites - Yep, I agree with this. My dog Molly has been bitten before, although it's hard to tell a bite from a nettle sting. She's got a habit of running into nettles and thistles - no brains! (Well they do say that dogs take after their owners - Mark)

Items Stuck In Throats - Yet another point we agree on, although this isn't really isolated to the summer months. Molly used to have a really big thing for sticks and an even bigger thing for destroying them!

We stopped her having sticks, with the old "rubber ring swap trick". This was mainly because she would get bits of wood stuck between her teeth. This proved a right pain trying to get it out, as she started to recognise the tweezers - then she would clamp up, the little bugger!

So sticks are now banned, after a few trips to the vets to get the wood out, she is now totally weaned of sticks!

Road Accidents - It's amazing how many roaming dogs I have seen on main roads the last few weeks, its really sad to see.

We have "rescued" a number of escapee's and called the owners or the dog warden, but now I just tend (reluctantly) to drive past, I'd never get any work done otherwise. It makes me mad that people do not secure their dogs properly. I understand that some dogs escape all the time, but they should be watched and put on lead!

Keep your dogs safe people!
