The Number of Dog Insurance Claims Rise During The Month of November
Remember, Remember the 5th of November.
Pet Insurance claims rocket by 23% in November.
As every dog lover knows, the run-up to Bonfire night is nervy time. And according to recent reports, November is the most dangerous time of the year for dogs.
The expert claims that dog insurance claims could rise by up to a quarter this November and as a result, we are warning all dog owners to be particularly vigilant during this ‘firework season’.
The report claims that up to 1 in 6 vets will treat dogs for firework related problems this winter, this includes both physical and mental problems, and anyone without dog insurance could be in for an expensive time!
Dog insurance expert Nick Kidd says 'Symptoms of stress in animals are fairly acute and include vocalisation (e.g, barking), hyperventilation, destructive behaviour, loss of appetite, licking or panting, shaking, hiding, whimpering, urination and self-harm. This can be very disturbing for owners but dogs can be easily treated with sedatives.
'November will see the beginning of a sustained period of firework displays and this will no doubt coincide with a large number of accidents involving pets.
'It is worth pointing out that when your pet is harmed, it is not only distressing for the animal, but also equally distressing for the owner. People tend to feel helpless.
'Apart from being extra vigilant, one of the best things you can do is insure your pets against injury and stress through a dog insurance scheme. The peace of mind that comes with knowing you won’t have to fork out if the worst happens is certainly worth it.'
The RSPCA guide to safeguarding animals during the firework season:
Never light fireworks near animals
Keep all pets indoors after dark
Ask a vet to provide a sedative for a pet dog that is particularly sensitive to noise
Move rabbits and other outdoor pets to a garage or outbuilding
Keep curtains closed and camouflage the noise of fireworks by leaving a TV or radio on
Build bonfires as late as possible and gently disturb the foundations a few hours before lighting to ensure there are no animals such as hedgehogs inside
Ensure pets have a collar and tag or even a microchip in case they are scared by fireworks and bolt
Always clear up after a fireworks party - litter is hazardous to domestic and wild animals
